“Achievement Gap” KBTC video about THA’s McCarver Elementary School Special Housing Program

The Tacoma Housing Authority’s McCarver Elementary School Special Housing Program was launched more than five years ago. It’s a pilot project in conjunction with the Gates Foundation and the Tacoma Public Schools to see whether if by providing transient families housing vouchers, the resulting stability would flow-through and into measurable academic success for their school-aged children.

In addition to a wide variety of other community partners, KBTC Public Television’s community engagement team is an active participant in the program providing summer learning camps other enrichment opportunities. In this follow up Northwest Now, we learn more about the initial results of this now nationally recognized program, plans for expansion, and about the impact the program has had on the approximately 50 families involved.
