Tacoma Housing Authority’s Education Project
Tacoma Housing Authority works with Tacoma Public Schools, local colleges and universities, and a wide variety of community partners to provide educational opportunities for our families. We are committed to providing not just high quality housing, but to helping our residents succeed as parents, students, wage earners, and neighbors.
We have a particular focus on literacy and graduation from high school ready for college and careers. Sources for help in these areas are listed on the left.
You can read more about our ambitious Education Project here.
McCarver Elementary School Housing Stability Initiative
McCarver Elementary serves Tacoma's poorest population. It has the largest populations of homeless students in the district and has a high turnover rate of students. This turnover rate arises from poverty and housing instability.
To help stabilize its population and improve student learning, THA will provide rental assistance to up to 50 families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and who have children at McCarver. The families can keep the rental assistance for up to 5 years. During that time they will receive personal support from our case workers. THA and the School District will be studying the effect of this increased stability on student learning and family outcomes

Basic Skills Education and Job Training
Support for Basic Skills Education and Job Training are provided through our Community Services Department. Get more information about that through the links to the left.
Show Me the Math
THA is partnering with Tacoma Public Schools to help students in Tacoma connect what they learn in school with the business world. Students visit community partners and learn how they use math in their day-to-day work.
This project was recognized nationally as a successful program. Read more about that here.
Washington State College Bound Scholarships
THA is actively supporting the Washington State College Bound Scholarship program. The College Bound Scholarship provides hope and incentive for students and families who otherwise might not consider college as an option because of its cost.
The amount of the scholarship will be based on tuition rates at Washington public colleges and universities and will cover the amount of tuition and fees (plus $500 for books) not covered by other state financial aid awards.
Low-income 7th and 8th grade students who sign a pledge by June 30 of their 8th grade year are eligible. Students promise to graduate from high school, demonstrate good citizenship, and seek admission to a college or university. Family income will be re-checked and college admission confirmed after the student graduates from high school.
Families interested in applying for this scholarship can contact the counselor at your school.
